Friends of Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Needs Your Help to bring hands-on science education to the children of Los Angeles

  • Cabrillo Marine Aquarium sees more than 300,000 visitors per year.
  • 150,000 K-12 students from the LA-basin visit annually on tours and for programs.
  • Spring Outdoor Classroom, a “sold out” program each year, uses the beach to teach 1,000 children per day for 9 weeks.
  • Our student population is 73% Hispanic, 11% African American and 9% Caucasian, and 74% qualify for free- or reduced-price meals.
  • LAUSD’s needs in science education are supported by CMA’s award-winning programs. The majority of students that attend our programs successfully continue to pursue STEM and STEAM curriculums.
  • Our Ocean Outreach program “delivers” the Aquarium to more than 60 area schools when students cannot leave school for field trips.
  • Friends annual budget of $1.4 million allows us to provide CMA with more than $800,000 per year towards programs and exhibits, outside the scope of support from the City of Los Angeles.
  • 500+ volunteers contribute more than 33,000 service hours annually - the equivalent of 29 full-time jobs.
  • CMA welcomes more than 10,000 visitors annually to see the grunion’s midnight performance of their unique mating ritual on the beach.
  • Beginning as a Museum in 1935 and becoming a Frank Gehry-designed center for teaching and research, CMA is unparalleled in its urban/ocean environment.
  • CMA holds 4 awards from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums for exhibits, programs, and animal husbandry.
